GLOBAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
SAN DIEGO UNIVERSITY CALIFORNIA 2023

BE THE CHANGEMAKER

BY BRANSON TAN Y10N

I attended the four-day Global Youth Leadership Summit (GYLS) from the 7th to the 12th of July, representing Malaysia along with two other students. I was encouraged to attend the summit by my personal tutor. I applied and was selected to participate. The Summit attracted youth from 23 different countries across the globe.

The Tony Robbins Foundation organized the summit, and I was required to write a convincing letter to the organizers entitled ‘Why I should be chosen to represent Malaysia at the GYLS 2023 event,’

Two weeks later I was selected! and the news left me overjoyed. As the program approached, I encountered a series of demanding interview sessions. Together, I embarked on a collective journey with 2 other participants towards our shared objective of representing Malaysia.

The workshops were led by industry experts, social entrepreneurs, and renowned leaders. Each session had a specific objective: developing leadership skills, fostering critical thinking abilities, and empowering participants to find their voice.

We heard inspiring stories of triumph over adversity from Kathy Buckley, a deaf comedian, and Nick Santonassto, born with Han Hart syndrome. Persistence and passion can lead to extraordinary achievements.

In addition to gaining valuable knowledge and skills, my participation in the program facilitated self-reflection and personal growth. It provided an opportunity for me to develop courage and confidence, enabling me to engage more confidently with others.

During the interactive self-analysis sessions, we explored our strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. The program boosted our confidence by emphasizing individual growth and helping us discover our own power. Absolutely life-changing!

We had limited time for sightseeing due to conference activities and food served at university dorms.

I came home with a new burst of confidence and energy. I know that I can make a difference in this world and I want to. I made so many new friends and penned my mind to unlimited opportunities and experiences.

GYLS is important in my journey to becoming a better leader at school and change-maker in my country.
