STUDENTS and teachers from Sri Dasmesh International School Kuala Lumpur were recently at Zoo Negara to support the establishment’s volunteer programme.
Earlier this month, the school had organised a donation campaign to sponsor boots for volunteers plus a cash donation for the lion-feeding programme. A total of 130 pairs of boots were bought and distributed throughout the various sections of the zoo.
The group from Sri Dasmesh was given a warm welcome by Zoo Negara officer (Public Affairs) Ahmad Safuan and deputy president Rosly Ahmat Lana.
Students were treated to a tram ride to distribute the boots, and at the same time to collect old boots for recycling. They also had the opportunity to walk around and spend the day with the animals, including the zoo’s newly-acquired pair of pandas.
The students had high praise for Zoo Negara, saying it was really clean and well kept.
Besides having an enjoyable time, the students learnt about the finer points of caring for zoo animals from the zoo keepers.
Many students shared that they would like to be volunteers at the zoo. They said that the day spent there afforded them a clear understanding of the way a zoo is run and the life and duties of zoo keepers.
